Simple Eco-Friendly Design Choices to Make for Your Home

Eco-Friendly Design Choices

Earth Day has come and gone, but we’re continuing to make eco-friendly choices in many of our clients’ homes. Making a few eco-conscious design decisions in your own home doesn’t have to include upgrading every feature in your home to the latest energy-saving appliance or material. In fact, there are many simple steps you can take to make your redesign or remodel more environmentally friendly.

Lucky for us, there are more and more stylish, eco-friendly brands and resources available than ever. Here are a few eco-friendly alternatives to keep in mind!

  1. Make the Old New Again

Rather than shopping new, vintage pieces offer character and create less waste. If you’ve found a vintage piece you love, but it needs work to look new again don’t let that turn you off. Chicago has many experienced craftsmen that can make anything look new again!

If you can’t find exactly what you’re looking for in stores, then you may want to have a piece custom-made for you. If it’s your style, find someone who can make your furniture out of reclaimed wood or more sustainable materials.

  1. Let in Sunshine

Lighting is one of the most important elements of design, but homeowners often forget about the best light source there is: natural light! Rather than using energy to light up your home’s overhead lighting, consider using sheer curtains to let in plenty of natural light during the day and keeping electric lights off.

  1. Update Windows

If you live in an older home, then you may need to look into updating your windows. This might sound like an intensive task, but you’d be surprised how quickly professionals can update them. Thanks to innovative technology, many windows now better insulate your home from the cold and heat in order to reduce energy costs for cooling and heating.

  1. Look for Quality

One of the simplest ways to make a green decision is to buy less! Rather than buying many accents or bargain-bin art pieces that will end up sitting in a closet, choose a few statement pieces that you love. We often work with homeowners to select a few pieces of artwork made by local artists. Once the pieces are installed, they’re often amazed at how a few statement pieces can transform a room.

Are you ready to really go green in your home? Schedule a consultation with us today, and find out how your remodel can be chic and eco-friendly.
